Mahomes’ mammoth deal

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Mahomes in the first round (10th overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft. They signed him to a guaranteed four-year, $16.42 million contract that included a signing bonus of $10.08 million.

After trading Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins in 2018, the Chiefs elevated Mahomes to a starting quarterback position. In his first game as a starter, Mahomes beat division-rival Los Angeles Chargers by 38–28 and was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Mahomes: Super Bowl accolades

After winning the 2019 Super Bowl game, rumours started to indicate that the Chiefs wanting to secure the young quarterback on a multi-year deal.

On April 30, 2020, the Chiefs picked up the fifth-year option on Mahomes’ contract, and they signed him to a ten-year extension worth $477 million with another $26 million in potential bonuses for a total of $503 million. The contract extends through the 2031 season, and at the time of signing, it was the largest in American professional sports history. His average annual salary comes out to around $45 million.

Patrick Mahomes officially became the first professional athlete to have a half a billion-dollar contract. While at the time it was a stupendous amount of money for a sports star, he does not make the top 5 of highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

Shortly after signing the colossal contract, Mahomes told CBS Sports, “I haven’t bought anything… I feel exactly the same… I’m going to be the same person I was before I got the contract and before I got to the NFL.”
